Coyotes and Foxes in the Suburbs – David Drake
Tuesday, April 9th, 2019 (6:00-7:30pm)
Location: Town of Middleton – Town Hall, 7555 Old Sauk Rd, Verona, WI 53593
Join us for a fascinating presentation on coyotes and foxes in Madison, and how they seem to have found a way to coexist in urban areas.
Foxes and coyotes now frequent the various neighborhoods of Madison. UW Professor in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, and Extension Wildlife Specialist David Drake has a number of projects to study the behavior of these mammals, to monitor their ecology and movement. His research and extension programs primarily focus on wildlife and wildlife damage management in human-dominated landscapes.
As Drake has said, “The coyotes certainly aren’t going anywhere. They’re not going to get up and leave the city, and the humans are not going anywhere. So we better figure out how to co-exist.”
This map (above) shows where foxes and coyotes roam in Madison, Wisconsin. The information was collected from GPS collars placed on the animals by David Drake, professor of forest and wildlife ecology, and his former graduate student, Marcus Mueller, as part of a study of urban canids. Marked in blue are the coyote home ranges, and in red are the fox home ranges. Courtesy of David Drake
This presentation is free and open to the public – no registration is necessary.
